Archive of Building Work
The Production Literature of the GDR
The working conditions on building sites and the labour of building workers have re-emerged as key concerns in architecture. The new interest in building work raises questions about the methods and media that describe the social, technical, and cultural life of construction and its encounter with architecture. How do we know about building work? What does it mean to write about building work? What about the contradictions of writing about the building site, away from the building site? This talk turns to literary fiction as means of critical insight and suggest literature as one possible archive for studying the building site. The Production Literature of the GDR, the literary engagement with socialist production, the subjectivity and collectivity in the construction of socialism, and the reconstruction of the GDR after the World War, often centres on the individual mental and physical experiences on building sites. What fictional insights, to use a term by Katherine Shonfield, can be gained from the interpretation of literature? What can be mobilised for architectural pedagogy, architectural production, and architectural design today?
Tilo Amhoff is a Senior Lecturer in Architectural Humanities at the University of Brighton. His research explores the various labours and the social, economic, and political conditions of the social process of the production of architecture. He co-edited Produktionsbedingungen der Architektur (2018), together with Gernot Weckherlin and Henrik Hilbig, and Industries of Architecture (2015), together with Katie Lloyd Thomas and Nick Beech. Tilo Amhoff is the Chair of the Architectural Humanities Research Association (AHRA) and a founder member of Netzwerk Architekturwissenschaft, where he also co-directs the Architecture and Building working group. His current book project, entitled The Making of Plans, extends his PhD, and investigates the beginnings of the architectural, urban, and economic plan as instrument and product of regulation, organisation, and administration in Germany.
